What is Form 990?
Form 990 is the IRS return that tax-exempt organizations must file annually to report their financial activities, mission, and governance information.
Which organizations need to file Form 990?
All 501(c) organizations (charitable, educational, religious, etc.) generally must file annually unless they meet very specific exemptions, such as church congregations or integrated auxiliaries.
Which version of Form 990 should I file?
- Form 990-N (e-Postcard): For gross receipts under $50,000
- Form 990-EZ: For gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000
- Form 990: For larger organizations
Form 990-PF: For private foundations
When is Form 990 due?
The filing deadline is the 15th day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends (May 15 for most calendar-year organizations). Extensions are available for six months.
What happens if we don’t file?
Failure to file for three consecutive years results in automatic revocation of tax-exempt status by the IRS. We can assist with reinstatement filings.
Do we have to make our Form 990 public?
Yes. The IRS requires most Form 990 returns to be available for public inspection. We help ensure your disclosures are clear and professional.
Can you assist with unrelated business income (UBI) reporting?
Absolutely. We prepare Form 990-T for organizations that earn income from business activities unrelated to their exempt purpose.
Do you provide bookkeeping or advisory support for nonprofits?
Yes. We offer integrated bookkeeping, grant compliance reviews, and annual advisory sessions to maintain financial transparency and efficiency.
